Identifying Common Household Pests

Household pests can be more than just a nuisance; they can also pose health risks and cause damage to your home. Understanding how to identify these pests is the first step in managing them effectively. In this guide, we will explore common household pests, their characteristics, and practical tips for dealing with them.

Common Household Pests:

Cockroaches

Cockroaches are one of the most common household pests. They thrive in warm, humid environments and are often found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Characteristics:

Color: Ranges from light brown to black.

Size: Typically 1 to 4 inches long.

Behavior: Nocturnal and can run quickly.

Cockroaches can carry diseases and trigger allergies. If you see one, it’s likely there are more hiding nearby.

Ants

Ants are social insects that live in colonies. They can invade homes in search of food and water.

Characteristics:

Color: Varies by species; common colors include black, red, and brown.

Size: Usually 1/8 to 1/2 inch long.

Behavior: Often seen in long lines or scattered around surfaces, especially when foraging for food.

To manage an ant problem, locate the nest and eliminate it. Using bait traps can also be effective. We don't advise pouring hot or boiling water into the nest as this is incredibly cruel.

Woodworm

Woodworm are known for their wood-eating habits, which can cause significant damage to homes. These are not actually worms, but the larva of a wood boring beetle.

Characteristics:

Color: Light creamy white.

Size: 3-7mm long when adults.

Behaviour: You may be able to hear faint clicking or ticking noises from the larvae feeding inside the wood, especially in quiet environments.

Signs of a woodworm infestation include exit holes, 1-2mm in diameter, fresh holes have sharp edges and may have debris around them. Early detection is crucial to prevent extensive damage.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are small, flat insects that feed on human blood. They are often found in bedding and furniture.

Characteristics:

Color: Reddish-brown.

Size: About the size of an apple seed.

Behavior: Nocturnal and can hide in small crevices.

Bed bug bites can cause itchy welts. If you suspect an infestation, wash all bedding and consider contacting us so we can use a chemical spray that will eradicate the infestation.

Rodents

Rodents, such as mice and rats, are common household pests that can cause damage and spread disease.

Characteristics:

Color: Varies; common colors include gray, brown, and black.

Size: Mice are typically 2 to 4 inches long, while rats can be 6 to 10 inches long.

Behavior: Nocturnal and can reproduce quickly. Mice are inquisitive, rats are neophobic so are scared and nervous of new things in their environment.

Signs of rodent activity include droppings, gnaw marks, and nests made of shredded materials. Sealing entry points and setting traps can help control their population. If you have a current infestation, we suggest our services to remove them first before blocking entry holes, as rodents rely on muscle memory and will try to re enter their usual 'doorways'. This could mean destruction of proofing to gain reentry.

Identifying Pests

Visual Identification

One of the best ways to identify pests is through visual inspection. Look for:

  • Droppings: Different pests leave different types of droppings.

  • Nests: Some pests build nests that can be found in hidden areas.

  • Damage: Chewed wires, holes in walls, or damaged furniture can indicate a pest problem.

Using Traps

Setting traps can help you identify the type of pest you are dealing with. For example:

  • Sticky traps can catch insects like cockroaches and ants.

  • Snap traps are effective for rodents.
